PUNK Magazine Collection # 8

So I LOVE the Punk scene! I had my phase of being in that scene though it is behind me I still have this obsession I guess, with the way Punk use to be when it came out in the 70's. The bands were definitely a big part of it but it was more the image, the art of it all. The Punk life style is what interested me the most, how it was free and rebellious. In one of my Punk history books; "Punk: The Whole Story", I came across a section about the magazine, it's creators and artists.
The magazine was originally suppose to be a rock n' roll comic book, explains editor and writer John Holmstrom. The magazine, published in New York between 1976-1979 sparked the punk "fanzine" crazyness.
The first issue had Lou Reed on the cover. January 1976- Illustration by John Holmstrom

Issue 8: The Sex Pistols, March 1977. This cover was done by a guy called Steve Taylor. Holmstrom states: "Instead of drawing with a pen, he'd use an ink dropper or a broken quill and scribble withe that and get ink everywhere, he didn't want firm control over the ink."

Issue 10: Blondie. Cover art done by: Bobby London

Issue 3 April, 1976, Joey Ramone. Cover by: John Holmstrom

There many more issues of PUNK though the magazine declined in 1979, there were anniversary additions. Here is a couple of websites I came across on my search for the pictures of the magazine.

There is also a lot to be said about the image of punk, the way they dress, their life style and music set them in a scene of rebelling against society and their ideals. Much opposite of the hippie culture witch came just years before it. Punks believed in Anarchy and creating a imagine to shock the public. These are a few photos I came across that have a certain poetic feel to the whole scene, it is, I think, art in itself. Punk came out of London in the 1970s and spread to New York city in underground clubs such as CBGB and Max's.

The Sex Pistols

The Ramones

Punk Romeo And Juliet. Sid and Nancy

Random Punks from the 70's

Patti Smith, Poetic genius
I feel there is something artistic about Punk all together, there's a certain poetic undertone about it all that I just love. I always say I was born in the wrong era.

The art of Hula Hooping. Collection #7

I'm not sure if this could be considered an actual collection but the art of Hula Hooping is fascinating to me. I discovered it this summer when I went to my first festival, Camp Bisco. I met this girl that amazed me and I bought a hoop shortly after that. The heavier hoops are for beginners and when you get better you move to a thinner hoop but still with some weight to it to dance with. The designs on the hoops are pretty artistic themselves, I do plan on making some this summer also.
Hooping came to Britain around 1300 using homemade hoops. In the 1800s british sailors witnessed hula dancing in the Hawaiian Islands, and as this looked similar to hooping, the name "hula hoop" originated.

I found a couple videos of hooping online, these were my favorite and inspiring to me. This first one is Lisa Lotti, I'm not sure of the location, she uses up to 8 hoops at a time!
The next video is of the girl who inspired me to start hooping, her name is Arielle Cravatta I met her at camp and was amazed! she's also one of the sweetest girls I've ever met. =]

At the end of Camp, on the last morning I saw this girl with a fire hoop and I was so amazed! I hope one day I get good enough to get one. This isn't the chick from Bisco but she's pretty good too.
Hoops come in all sizes and patterns, they're fire hoops and collapsible hoops for easy transportation, also they're L.E.D hoops with lights in them. You can usually find hoopers at festivals, concerts and Raves.

Hoops have been around for thousands of years but usually we would think of a hoop as a child's toy, now it seems to have become a great art form. I love it because hooping becomes a type of meditation as well as exercise that helps one become centered, with only, you, your hoop and the music <3

Collection #6 My own Art Scarlet Evann

I do consider myself an artist, it's really the only thing in my life that helps me keep going to express myself and the things i have been through. It's the one thing I'm really good at an I hope one day I can start selling my paintings and become well known for them. But on the other hand I know when I die they will be worth more. Isn't that always the way! HA! Anyways, I started drawing for fun and took classes all throughout high school, I have many sketch books which have my early work in them but I paint more then I can draw. I started painting with acrylic and discovered Oil in my freshman year at ECC north. I had Mr. Porter, who I am also taking a drawing two class with this semester. (awesome teacher i must say) Anyways! I'll Start with my favorite pieces and add more once i get them on my computer.

My first piece is my favorite oil piece iv done, the canvas is 18x 20 Camaro SS 1969 my favorite car! I believe this is from 2010

This next piece I did a couple weeks ago. I love Sid and Nancy, and the whole punk movement. I've read about Nancy Spungen and her mental disorders and the true romance between her and SId Vicious that I kind of have a little obsession with them. This first painting is an oil paining i think it is 18x 20 maybe a little bigger.

The next is a drawing I did in high school in a sketch book of Sid and Nancy. pencil drawing

I have had a phase in my art where I drew alot of mushrooms. I guess it was my hippie phase.
This is something I drew just in pen on regular sheet of notebook paper. I think this was done in 2010
This next picture I think was also done in 2010 with pastels

More pastel artwork done in my sketch book "Dont fear the Reaper"
This next one is a painting i did for my Niece, she is now 11 months old. I did this before she was born for her room. The theme was purple butterflies.
I also enjoy a bit of photography. These are my two favorite pictures I took.
The first one is of my friend Kerensa on the train tracks in depew last summer. I love black an white, it's more real I think it captures more emotion in a photo.
I did take some pictures of Mike's tree but I can't find the original ones, this is one I edited on my computer, I think it looks really cool.

Collection #5 Tim Burton

I had to add Tim Burton to my collection, I realize he is very well known but he's my favorite artist! Tim Burton was born August 25th, 1958 in Burbank, California. He attended the California Institute of Arts and worked as a Disney animator for less then a year before branching off on his own projects. Tim Burton's work combines a collection of fantasy and horror in clay animation. Some of his movies are not animation but still capture the strange dark side that is Tim Burton. Some of his movies include: Nightmare Before Christmas, Beetlejuice, Batman, Coraline, NINE, and the newer Alice In Wonderland. I love the art work in his movies because they're kind of morbid yet the stories has a lesson behind them. I also love how he depicted the old animated Alice in Wonderland, putting his own twist on it and bringing it to life.

The first movie of Tim Burton that i love is Nightmare Before Christmas, which is all clay animation. Came into theaters in 1993
The first two pictures are of Jack, clay animation combined with computer animation.

This is the Halloween town that he created for the movie

The next clay animation movie I wanted to share is Coraline, with the same type of style as Nightmare Before Christmas, a young girl finds her way into a different reality that may or may not be in her dreams. 2009

This last picture of the set of Coraline is part of the garden that was created for the film.

Another film he did was a remake of the Disney's Alice in Wonderland. This movie came out in 2010, it is suppose to be based off the second part of the book; Though the Looking Glass. (I never finished the book so I'm not sure how closely he fallowed the story.) Johnny Depp plays the Mad Hatter and he is in quite a few of Tim Burton's film.

I like the colors of the Cheshire cat and how he looks like smoke when evaporating.

I love the scenery in that it's very mystical but almost like it could be a real place. The art in this film is very intriguing, to see how The Wonderland comes to life. I saw the film for the first time in 3D and the graphics were amazing. I love the scenery.

Mike SS and his art

Sometimes no matter how many years go by you still think of someone you lost and all the haunting memories that come with it. I have tried very hard to set him in my past knowing that one day when i leave this world I will have him back again. But everyday he is on my mind and I can distract myself for a while but sometimes you need to express how you feel for the loss of something. Maybe this is crazy but Mike and I have this crazy connection i don't think i have ever had with anyone else so far anyways. He was a really amazing friend and incredibly smart i miss him so much i just thought i'd post some of his "art work". These are ones he had posted but there are a million more at his house. Enjoy his crazyness and feel free to post your thoughts...

He was pretty proud of this one, we were talking the one day an he told me to go check it out. its a little collage he did of glue, magazines and a razor blade. I feel that mike thought of art in a therapeutic way, as well as most artists do. I think if he went into animation, he could have done great things.

These were done on a wall with ...i dont remember...deodorant? lol and a black light you can kinda see his name on the side. yea i think that says mike =] the caption was just "I drew this on my wall lol"

This last one that i have explains mike perfectly. The caption is "I drew this for you" HAHAH so mikey. He really didnt care what other people thought. He would be friends with anyone as long as they showed him the same respect, he didnt care if other people looked down at you, he'd be your friend. I loved Mike for this. I was looked down on alot but he always stuck up for me and stuck by my side.

It'll be 3 years in July and i guess I shouldn't still be thinking of him as much as I do but I hope some of you will understand how it feels to lose someone so suddenly. I regret alot of what happened before he passed, I wish I had more time, but mike was meant to be set an example, to help us learn, to be at peace, and here, he was not at peace.
Because I have not fully made sense of our friendship, or his death and because there is alot I have made sense of, alot of my artwork is either about him or has some stuff of him in it.

First drawing: I guess i could call this the "Sacrament" which means something regarded as possessing a sacred or mysterious significance. pencil on 9x12 drawing paper

This one is just abstract, drawn in 09 a week or two after...i actually dont remember. Pastels on 9x12

This is a picture i took of a tree mike had carved his name in at Como Park in Depew. I edited it in a filter program i found online. I like how it looks old fashioned.

I started an oil painting on some type of board, forgot what its called. im further done then the pictures i have of it but its still not finished. This is a painting i did of Mike driving his firebird. I set it in California because he went there to pick up his older brother and took alot of pictures of the sky.

As you can see mikey looks like a ghost haha how ironic! well as of now i do have his hand done and most of his face, hat, glasses, he just needs side burns :)
I will be posting more. I really needed some room to express how much i miss him. Thanks for listening <3
 My Mike Tattoo:

Collection #4

On my search i found Valentina Plishchina, i like her works because as she describes they're works that came from her subconscious and flow out through her paintings. She also uses water color which I as an artist personally couldn't capture things how i wanted because it was some what sloppy for me. I think it's great that someone can make beautiful works of art with such a hard medium. Her works were published in Volume V of International Contemporary Masters 2012 and world wide art books. I discovered her on local artists.com.
This is the painting of hers i chose called 'In a blue mood' because the paint flows with whatever she may have been thinking and it's abstract. It's a painting that kind of speaks to me and speaks to other people in different ways. Looking closely, you can see a girl in the corner that seems like she is in a blue mood and the thoughts might be the colors that are either her hair or how her mind is thinking. There are also different shapes that look like flowers in the outline. Her work is quite inspiring to me and i think art should be inspiring in different ways to different people.
